Limestone

Limestone is one of the most widely used rocks in construction and industry. We quarry it in Ogun State, crush it to the sizes you need, and supply it across the region.

The stone

What limestone is

Limestone is a sedimentary rock made mostly of calcium carbonate, usually as the mineral calcite. It forms over very long periods, from the remains of marine life and from calcium carbonate that settles out of water.

Compared with granite it is softer and easier to crush, and it reacts with acid. Those two traits explain much of how it is used, from a bulk material for building to a raw material for cement and lime.

Key properties

  • Easy to crush

Softer than granite, so it breaks down readily into a useful range of sizes.

  • Chemically active

Rich in calcium carbonate, it reacts with acids and breaks down with heat, which is the basis of cement and lime.

  • Widely useful

The same stone serves construction, manufacturing and farming.

Uses

Where limestone is used

  • Concrete and construction

Crushed stone is a main ingredient of concrete and a bulk material across building work.

  • Road base and fill

Compacted crushed stone gives roads, floors and foundations a firm base.

  • Cement

Limestone is the main raw material for making cement.

  • Lime

Heated in a kiln, limestone becomes lime, used in construction, water treatment and industry.

  • Agriculture

Ground limestone is spread on farmland to reduce soil acidity.

  • Glass and steel

Limestone is used in glassmaking and as a flux in steelmaking.
